Kilko Paz / Albuquerque

Well I am not sure what I am going to do later in my life, like I am not even sure if I am going to stay here, but I think if I am going to stay here, that I have the time that I am staying here, I am going to stay doing what I like and just enjoying this beautiful, magnificent, state. Just every day is a blessing, you know, just being able to watch this wonderful skies, and sunsets, it is just amazing. Geography was more… I was interested more in the IT, in the programming part, because I am a computer science programmer, so I am used to more GAS technology now, so that is why I have chosen that career, more than the physical aspect, it was more of the programming part.

We as immigrantes we are worried about what is really going to happen.

We have another song against police brutality and we had a lot to collaborate with Hakim and Nick Fury and they did, the whole song is in Spanish but they intervene with some hip hop in the middle of the song, both protest against police brutality, so it was amazing, and I think we have a community of art and musicians that is well established here and we are becoming, I am thinking Albuquerque is becoming a city, a high level city for art, quickly. I can see Albuquerque like Austin in the future because it’s the community of musicians that is so rich so diverse that is creating this beautiful art and music.

English Translation

My name is Kilko Paz. I’m from Bolivia. I came here in 2008. Alright, I moved here because I was married to an American and we came here because she began studying at UNM. So I took the opportunity to also get my master’s degree in Geography at UNM, which I did, eight years ago.

This is the first city in which I’ve lived, actually the only city in which I’ve lived, here in the US. I visited Chicago a bit. I was also in New York, but Albuquerque seems to be a city that has a lot of identity and a lot of culture, and that immediately grabbed my attention because it seems that people here communicate here more. Also, in the day-to-day, when one is walking down the street, one can see that people make more eye contact. There is more that resembles my country as well, such as shaking hands and giving a hug. Those things are being lost in other parts. I liked that a lot. I like it a lot.

I also work here at UNM in the Continuing Education Department, but that’s what I do during the day, let’s say, to eat. But really, my passion is music, and that is what I do with more commitment, political and social, because the group I play with is called “Baracutanga.” It’s a happy, danceable, fun, Latin music group, but we also have a strong message in the social, as well as the political arena.

We got together here. Look, I arrived and in six months I was ready to go back. If I don’t find music…I could live in the North Pole, if I have music then it’s all good, but if I don’t have music, I can’t adjust. That’s the only condition I have when I move to a new place. I found music. I found a group of friends that would make Brazilian, percussive music and I started playing a bit of percussion. I am now a drummer. It became more of a South American music band, that’s what we played the most, but it’s from familiarity because there were people from Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina. After that, the majority of the people were from the US, from different parts. It’s a diverse group, but that’s where we get our power, in diversity.

baracutanga-4

Look, as musicians we have a powerful tool of communication, and it makes me ashamed that some use it to sing songs with themes like, “Shake it, baby.” You know what I mean? I think that, having that power, that powerful tool, you have to say something. I believe it’s important. Whatever you want to say. If you want to sing it to the environment, sing it. We’re going through a very crucial moment, with the Republican candidate. I think it’s very important that we say something, because whatever the decision, whatever happens it will affect us all as a society.

It started out simply as a group to get together and play Brazilian music, nothing more. All of a sudden it started to grow. We started writing our own songs, and when one starts writing songs, much personality is reflected in the song. The songs that I have written for the group are more or less about things I’m preoccupied with, either now or before. And they’re not only things that preoccupy me but other topics as well.

At first it was just here in Albuquerque, then we started venturing out to other places, Santa Fe, Taos. Down south we have a lot of people who follow us there, too, Silver City. I’m not sure why but that’s a city we love to go to. We also go to Las Cruces, we’ve been to Austin, we’ve been to Berkeley, Denver, Durango, even New Orleans. So we’re trying to go out more. We’re part of an agency, you could say, but in reality it’s an organization of artists called Avocado Artistas. The person in charge is Tom F. and we’re working under his direction. I believe it’s a big step for the band with the goal obviously being playing out more.

It’s going very well. I think the recipe is to make people dance. Yes, our shows are high energy. A lot of percussion, a lot of rhythm to dance to, and surely, if you go to the show, some show of ours, you are going to dance a lot, even if you don’t want to.

I’m taking some classes on how to play trombone. Before I had a master’s degree. I’ll finish that here in the Spring. Those three things were too much for me. I was super busy, but now I’m freer and I’m seeing what things I can do. I’m always looking for new opportunities here.

Well, I am not sure what I am going to do later in my life. Like I am not even sure if I am going to stay here, but I think if I am going to stay here, I am going to stay doing what I like and just enjoy this beautiful, magnificent state. Just every day is a blessing, you know. Just being able to watch these wonderful skies, and sunsets, it is just amazing. I was more interested in IT, in the programming part, because I am a computer science programmer. So I am used to more GAS technology now, so that is why I have chosen that career, more than the physical aspect, it was more of the programming part. In Bolivia, I graduated with a Bachelor’s in Computer Science.

In Bolivia we have a tough education system. Getting an A is like a dream. It’s really hard. If you pass the class that’s great. But getting a B or better means you are the best student. It’s hard, it’s really hard. What I see over here is that it’s a little easier to get an A. I don’t know why. It’s not good that someone is punished for something that they haven’t done, but it’s also not good to make something difficult. It was much more difficult over there.

Every year I go for at least 2 months to visit family in Bolivia. My entire family is over there. A family of more than 80 people. I also go to Costa Rica, which is where my wife’s family lives. My wife is Costa Rican so we go there as well.

Albuquerque, as I said, is a very interesting city full of people, really, from New Mexico. They make this state. New Mexico is always ranked very low in the economy and in education, but I think that in some way that is what makes New Mexico a place so culturally rich and so important, because you can’t measure all the indicators that’s states have. You can’t have the same standards for every state. You have to measure other things.

I believe that we, as humans, have to go back. We want to nearly destroy our home. In just listening to the ancients, to the Indigenous communities, that’s the knowledge that is really going to save us, I believe, as humans. With my band, we are debuting a video that took us a long time to make, “Sol de la Condenada.” It’s a song about an immigrant who arrives in the United States and he encounters the racism and hate that is so prevalent right now. Especially the racism and hate that is incited by Donald Trump, exactly. He arrives and finds a very unpleasant reality. I won’t tell you how it ends, that’s a surprise. We’re going to debut the video on the 14th of October. The third week of October we will be presenting on a national level and we hope the video raises awareness to this big problem. We, as immigrants, are worried about what is really going to happen.

We have another song against police brutality and we had to collaborate with Hakim and Nick Fury and they did, the whole song is in Spanish, but they intervene with some hip-hop in the middle of the song. Both protest against police brutality, so it was amazing, and I think we have a community of artists and musicians that is well established here, and we are becoming… I am thinking Albuquerque is becoming a high level city for art, quickly. I can see Albuquerque becoming like Austin in the future because there’s a community of musicians that is so rich, so diverse, that is creating this beautiful art and music.
