Juan Carlos Martínez / South Valley

(English translations below)

Me gusta mucho cocinar. Y aparte a mi me gusta mucho cocinar. No e cambiado mucho.

English Translation

My name is Juan Carlos Martínez. I live by Isleta and Bridge and have been living in Albuquerque for 4 years. I’ve only visited Houston, Texas. I like this place a lot because it’s calm, the environment is peaceful, and it’s not as populated as other states. Even though it’s somewhat small, I feel that it resembles my country. It looks like it a little, not too much. The weather is different than in my country. I am from El Salvador, and well, there aren’t a lot of people from El Salvador over here. I don’t know many. There are only a few. I also don’t know the area very well, or the state. I don’t even know the city of Albuquerque very well.

There is a place that is called San Vicente, San Sebastian. San Sebastian is the city and the departmento is San Vicente. Regarding customs or culture one can say that they’re not that different. I think there are a lot of things that are similar. Apart from the weather I think our cultures don’t vary much from each other. They’re almost the same. Over there we like to be more relaxed. We like to have fun, go dancing, go to the beaches…it’s a shame that over here there is not much to do. But in my country, where I lived there was a beach close by. I do miss all of that a lot. Even the way I interact with friends here is different. Over there, one can go out and half the people you see, know you, or say hi, even if you’re from different cities. You always get a greeting.

I’ve struggled with the language. I’m going to school at CNM to learn English. I now understand much of the language, but I still can’t have a conversation with someone. God willing, I’ll soon know another language.

My major motivation to move was that the majority of my family is here. I have 5 siblings that live here. The oldest sister has lived here for 20 or 25 years. She was the first to come here from my country, and little by little she began bringing the rest of us, one-by-one. At first, I wasn’t planning on traveling. I had my life mapped out in my country, but there was a time when the situation got fragile with delinquency. I don’t know if you here are aware of the gangs and all of that that exist in my country. I had some problems with some gang members. Not that I was involved in a gang, but they were trying to force me to join them. I’ve never liked that lifestyle. If I have friends in a gang, I can say hi to them, but I won’t get too close to them.

So I had this problem with them. They would insist and insist that I join them and that I should belong to this gang or that gang. But I didn’t want any of that. I was studying at the University. I got my degree in Business Administration and I was about to get a job at a bank. I had filled out the paperwork and everything and suddenly, the situation got really ugly. I had a confrontation with a gang where they aggressively wanted me to join them but I said, “No. Definitely not.” I told them being in a gang was not part of my plan and that that’s why I was studying. I wanted to improve my situation. I didn’t want to ruin my life. I asked my sister for advice on what I should do. She’s been like a second mother to us, being the eldest of the siblings, and she’s always been concerned with what’s happening in our lives or if we’re having trouble with anything. I didn’t hesitate for a second to tell her about my situation.

Over there, I had a profession, but it’s a shame that I couldn’t go to my job in peace and work in the field in which I studied because I would always have those guys on my back pressuring me to join their gang. So I made a decision with the help of my sister. She lent me a hand, gave me support. This was my motivation to leave my country. Even now, I haven’t overcome it…it feels like depression. I feel like everything I wanted to achieve in my own country, I couldn’t do because of certain circumstances. It’s a shame that the money that… well let’s not say that I threw it away because I gained knowledge, nonetheless…I have a degree, thank God. Perhaps in the future I will fully use to the fullest potential what I learned. And that’s why I say that I didn’t waste my money, because sooner or later every sacrifice is redeemed. I know that in one way or another I will take advantage of what I earned.

I was young (when his sister came to the United States), maybe around 8 or 9. El Salvador had suffered through another war, one more blow to the country. It’s a country that is always haunted by crime or war. At first there was war, and everyone was leaving trying to save their lives. Once the war calmed down, the gangs started up, doing what they do, killing people as if a person’s life had no worth or value. They do what they please and they don’t care. They do whatever they want with people. If they say they want something they get it at whatever cost. To this day, nobody, not even the state, has been able to stop this situation. It’s been like this for a long time. These are the circumstances which makes one leave their country.

Truth be told, there’s no place like the place where one was born. One finds themselves remembering their infancy or childhood. I get nostalgic remembering all that, remembering how I could go out on the streets freely, without fear that something was going to happen. I had a lot of friends. There are a lot of people who are very good over there. You can go to another departamento in your country and even though they don’t know you, they invite you into their home. They offer you something to eat and something to drink. Hospitality is alive-and-well among the people in my country. People who come from other countries also receive a warm welcome in my country. They always leave happy. There’s one problem…that of the gangs. That’s one of the major problems. That and the economy.

What people earn in my country is nothing. You could say that the prices of all the products are the same as here in the United States. Over there, we also use the dollar, but our salaries don’t compare. The minimum wage when I came was around $5 a day, forget about per hour, but a full day! Later if you go to the store to buy a chicken or whatever, it costs $5. Therefore, I’m working a full day to buy a chicken. That’s what fills one with despair and make the choice to pursue your destiny elsewhere, in the United States or wherever. Any other place besides El Salvador. At first when I got my degree, that didn’t matter to me. I would say that I would earn what I could and live peacefully. That was the ideal life. But earning very little money, and then running the risk of losing your life makes it an obligation to run away. These are the things that made me decide to come to these parts and take advantage of the fact that my family was here. One can go to another place where you don’t know anybody and have no one to support you, but at least the 5 of us are here and we support each other.

Sometimes, because of work, one forgets to communicate. But we try. That is part of our culture over there in my country. Family always tries to be united and to communicate. For example, if I can’t go visit you at your house even though you live 10 or 15 minutes away, I can at least call you on the phone. Or we can get together every now and then as a family. We’ll do a carne asada or anything else we come up with and we have a get-together. On birthdays we always get together and have a reunion. On holidays like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, or Christmas, we are always together. When someone is passing through a tough time, let’s say financial or anything of that nature, we try to help them. We get together and try to help the one who is going through some problem. Sometimes we experience the same problems. Today it’s him, tomorrow it could be me. The family bond has not been lost. We always have that communication. We always talk with the ones who are still over there; my mom, nephews, uncles, friends, everyone. I have a lot of friends over there.

Before I came over here I was part of a group at my church. I was well known for that. They knew that I couldn’t get caught up in gangs and all of that, knowing that that’s not what I wanted. It’s been 4 years and I still communicate with them in one way or another. Either they contact me or I contact them through Facebook or some other social network.

When I was in my country I liked being in church and when I got here the first thing I did was search for a church group. In fact, it was here at San José that I sought the help of the Father and got involved in the church groups. I’ve met many friends there. That’s where I started living another life, turned a page in my book, so to speak. I lost a lot of friends in my country because I had to leave. At first I felt alone and somewhat depressed because I felt that I had failed in the plans I had proposed for myself. On top of that, I couldn’t keep going to church or meet people of the same culture or any of that. So at the beginning, I felt really bad, but then I told myself, “If God wants me to be over here, then he will show me the paths to continue with my life.” I’ve always had faith in God. He has always given me what I have. I take care of my body and my health. I try to have fun in a healthy way, and thanks to God I don’t have any bad habits. I give thanks to God because he gave me that mentality. If he hadn’t deepened my understanding, then maybe I would be more lost. When I first arrived here the first thing I did was look for new people, new friends, and everything was in agreement with my personality. I wasn’t out looking for people who were involved in bad habits or drugs since I don’t like any of that. I also started going to a community called San Martín, another church community. There I met friends who weren’t part of the church but they didn’t have vices.

Sometimes, because I work, I can’t go out. I can’t be up and down, because I don’t have time for that. I try to organize my time. In fact, that is one of the keys of being a good business administrator, to know how to effectively manage your time. Everything has to be well organized so I try to put that into practice. I sometimes go to the river, for a walk, to the mountains, or a park. What I like about this place is that it’s peaceful and calm. There are many ways of having wholesome fun. Unfortunately, one cannot dedicate too much time to these activities. At the university, one has to commit themselves and educate themselves, recreating yourself daily, and not be left behind. I use social networks or other websites to further educate myself. I graduated in 2011 from the university and since then there have been many changes in business and new techniques used and, to not be left behind I must be current, always educating myself. I really like computers. It’s something that I have liked since I was in high school. I didn’t get into programming very much but I did learn how to maintain a computer. I also like to learn about new software that comes out.

I am fascinated by all sports, even though I am not so good at some but I try in my own way. I like to watch educational shows and listen to music. I like to go dancing and go to church. I like to cook. I work in restaurants. That’s how I eat and make money. In my free time I cook, organize my room, study, practice my English, which is what I really want to learn. And with God’s help I will soon learn it. Almost everything I do here is the same that I did over there. I haven’t changed much.

I work in a restaurant as a cook. Unfortunately, I am not working in my field of study. It’s a shame that when one studies so hard, they come here to be a cook. But work is work. No job is beneath any other. Also, we start from the bottom. We all start from the bottom. Someday, God willing, I can work in what I studied.

I dreamt of having my own business in my country. That was my dream. I told myself I wanted to be independent, not depend on a boss, but be my own boss. That’s why I studied Business Administration. I wasn’t able to achieve my dream over there but in some way I’ll be able accomplish my goal, either here or somewhere else. I know I have to do my part, which is why I am always educating myself. I haven’t lost sight of what I studied. At some moment I will be able to work in what I studied. Someone told me I should find out if I could keep pursuing my degree over here. At first, I slept a lot because I thought, “I can’t accomplish much here because I don’t know the language.” I went into my mind to try to turn off the illusion. So I am currently investigating whether my degree can transfer or if I can keep studying in my field. The main thing is, I need to be prepared.

I talked to someone at CNM to ask if something could be done and they said, “Yes,” but that first I had to get in contact with the university in my country to see if my credits could transfer. I still haven’t received a response from them. I call sometimes and the dean of the university is unavailable or I simply can’t get in touch with them. If my credits do transfer, then there’s a good chance that… if I can’t get my full degree, then I can get some credits transferred so I can finish over here. I’m going to keep knocking on doors to see if in one way or another something comes of this.

I have nothing to complain about. Truth be told, I am a calm person who doesn’t have conflicts with anyone. I have never had a run in with the law nor have I ever been pulled over. I always try to obey the rules, the laws and all that, and that’s why they’ve never told me anything. All I do is work, go home, study, and go out with my friends to have fun. This place is ideal to live. Even though I don’t know all of Albuquerque very well, I don’t have any quarrels with anybody. Even my neighbors I don’t know very well. I haven’t had any bad experiences in New Mexico.

Those closest to me are my mom and some nieces and nephews over in El Salvador. I have a lot of uncles, aunties, and cousins. We always think of my mom who was always caring for us when we were little. She helped me a lot when I was going to the university and I was living at home. She was always concerned with my well-being. I have a lot to be thankful for.
